JIAS: Addressing the needs of newcomers to Canada

The Honey & Barry Sherman Legacy Foundation’s transformative gift of $1 million to JIAS Toronto is shaping the future of services for newcomers to Canada.

Based in Canada’s largest city, JIAS supports new immigrants and refugees in four locations through two language schools and two settlement service offices. The Foundation’s gift will help ensure that JIAS can build capacity, respond to pressing needs, and meet each newcomer where they are at in their settlement journey. Through this gift, JIAS is now positioned to strengthen Mental Health and Wellbeing programming, support the needs of vulnerable refugees, develop innovative programs, and expand professional networking and mentorship services.

In recent years, many new arrivals have come from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Eritrea, Israel, and Turkey. Some of these newcomers have faced war and persecution in their home countries. Through a combination of practical and social support programs and services, JIAS helps these newcomers address immediate needs in Canada while also supporting their overall wellbeing.
